.On the main road between Thonac and Montignac. You can get a good view of the chateau on the road to Montignac if you stay on the Sergeac side of the river. Not on the scale of the Dordogne chateaux, but Chateau de Losse it is well looked after and has small but pretty gardens with an outdoor tea room.

Chateau de Commarque was abandoned and lost in the forest. It is situated in a quiet and long abandoned valley where the silt, debris and neglect of the centuries virtually swallowed the castle, and it is only in recent years that it has been 'rediscovered'. As you approach the castle you can see various prehistoric shelters and tunnels carved into the rock. This place has been inhabited for a very long time.

Commarque provides an opportunity to see how the castle and surrounding buildings were in the 15th century.  It is mostly in the open but there are some buildings still in tact.  It is good for children who need some space and fresh air.

Parking is a pleasant 600metres walk through the woods to preserve the quiet environment.

We love Hautefort! A very well restored chateau in a beautiful setting. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother stayed here for a night. There is a small coffee shop serving hot and cold drinks (including draught beer!) and savoury and sweet crepes. Open from April to November. About a 35 minute drive north from Sergeac.

Situated along the Dordogne valley not far from Beynac, Chateau des Milandes is well worth a visit. Josephine Baker, the singer lived here in the 1940’s and 50’s. The Chateau contains lots of memorabilia and information about her extraordinary life. There is also a falconry display 3 times a day in the grounds. Their website contains useful information such as opening times, entry prices etc.

One of the ‘famous five’ chateaux in the heart of the Dordogne Valley. It is truly majestic and stands very tall above the village of Beynac which hugs the Dordogne river. Walk up through the village and pay a visit. It is awe inspiring! And the views are fantastic. There is an English audio-guide available. Parking is in the village below or further up near the castle. Open all year round.

A delightful place to spend an afternoon. There are some really interesting clocks and artefacts from days gone by and there are great views from the tower which has an amazing roof structure. The dragon and his friends will entertain the children in the attic of the manor and don’t forget to look for the giant cedar tree in the garden. One of the oldest in France. Open from April to November.

Open most of the year and from May every day 9.30am-7.00pm

This is a lovely place to while away a morning or afternoon.  There is a good coffee shop/restaurant or you can take a picnic. Tables are provided near the car park. Lots of different areas to explore and plenty of space for children to run around.

In July and August on Monday evenings they are famous for Le Pique-Nique Blanc.  You can take a picnic or order one from the restaurant, to eat in the garden, but you have to wear white.  There is entertainment, music and fireworks.  We went with our family and really enjoyed it.  But you have to wear ALL WHITE. Not cream or stripes or spots.  It is worth the effort so bring some white clothes with you or pick something up in one of the budget clothing stores.

For the picnic you need to book our tickets in advance. Check the website for further details
